Dec 20    Walter Wolfman Washington's 75th Birthday Celebration at Ogden After Hours
Walter “Wolfman” Washington has been a mainstay in the New Orleans music scene since the early 1960s. He cut his teeth backing up some of the best singers and performers in New Orleans history, including Lee Dorsey, Johnny Adams and Irma Thomas before putting together his long time band The Roadmasters, who have been burning down and burning up local and national stages since their first gigs in the 1980s. Washington’s new album My Future is My Past, produced by Ben Ellman of Galactic, is a different kind of record than his playing with Lee Dorsey or The Roadmasters. Washington had to take more care with these songs. He explained, “When you’re with a band, you have to really punch it out. When you’re alone, you have to pay attention to your notes and pronunciation and stuff. And then you have to put your soul into it and your feelings. Each one of the songs is a story. You can actually picture things like that happening. I had to fix my mind into each of the situations in the song.” Washington has always embodied both the wildness and sophistication of New Orleans, but finally we have a set of songs that reflects the yin to Walter’s bring-the-party yang. This is the record that we all have known he has in him. This is the night after that party, or maybe just the after party. He’s been given free rein to express himself, and that’s special. Producer Ben Ellman has assembled a sympathetic group of musicians from keyboardists Jon Cleary and Ivan Neville to a versatile and sensitive rhythm section of bassist James Singleton and drummer Stanton Moore. When asked about being in the studio with these musicians, Washington’s enthusiasm comes through immediately. Walter uses his voice to embody both those traditions here, and then twist those traditions so that he’s doing both at the same time. His vocals and playing is quiet but keeps up the slow burn intensity. He filters his smooth croon through his unique raw blues feel, and the result is subtle, tasteful and powerful. His guitar playing has that searing tone but also the well placed chords of a bebop player. That’s all here but it’s jazzy and improvised and in the moment in such a way that you are on the edge of your seat wondering what he’ll do next. It is exciting to the listener, and it is exciting to Washington. He says, “People tell me, ‘Walter, you don’t ever lose the root of what you’re coming from,” and this record proves he is as close to his roots as he has ever been.

Dec 21 - Dec 22    Home for the Holidays
On Friday, December 21, 2018, join The NOCCA Institute, The New Orleans Advocate, and the family of Daniel Price for Home for the Holidays at House of Blues, 225 Decatur Street! Home for the Holidays is a night of spectacular art and music benefiting the Daniel Price Memorial Fund for Aspiring Artists, which honors the memory of NOCCA alumnus Daniel Price. In keeping with Daniel’s twin passions of art and music, the Fund provides scholarships for outstanding visual arts and music students at NOCCA. Home for the Holidays kicks off with a patron party from 6:30pm – 8:00pm. Gold- and Silver-level patrons will be treated to back-to-back performances by two New Orleans legends: Irma Thomas and John Boutte. As a special perk, our 80 Gold-level patrons will receive reserved seating in the House of Blues loge, which offers an unobstructed view of the stage. On the main floor of the concert hall, there will be a patron buffet from 6:30pm to 8:00pm. There will also be open bars upstairs and down, as well as a fabulous silent auction, featuring artwork by Daniel Price Award recipients. Gold- and Silver-level patrons will have access to the Parish Room, too, where there will be an open bar from 8pm until the end of the Home for the Holidays concert. Patrons will also be welcome in the Foundation Room, where Jon Roniger will perform. All patrons will be admitted through the Foundation Room entrance beginning at 6:30. Patron tickets are $145 for Silver-level and $290 for Gold-level. The party continues from 8:00pm – midnight with the official Home for the Holidays concert, featuring Trombone Shorty and Friends, Jon Batiste, the Preservation Hall Band, Water Seed, Ivan Neville and Friends, James Andrews, and New Breeds Brass Band, with emcee Gralen Banks. General admission tickets to the concert are $45. House of Blues will sell “fest food” all night long in the main hall to keep guests fueled up! Dec 27    Green Buddha at Ogden After Hours
Grooves in the service of songs, Green Buddha is that and more. Original Colorado music spawned from funk, reggae and soul,to ska and dub. The result is a brew of psychedelia with melodies and hooks galore. The best bands are formed by chemistry not design and their debut album “Small Town” proves the point. From the minds ofSeth Strickland, Otis Lande and Jonny Jyemo, along with fresh textures from Mikey B3 on Keys and Eric Benny Bloom (Lettuce) leading the brass, the album makes for a strong brew indeed. Green Buddha is in its true element performing live, whether as a power trio, “Got B3” Quartet or full Bloom of brass monster, this band brings the heat. “No Coast Reggae” A fresh incarnation of style from musicians with deep roots. The members of Buddha have brought their varied musical backgrounds together with and ear towards creating a distinct new reggae sound; a sound that speaks to Colorado’s vibe. The direction of this sound is deliberate and sets the band apart from other “American Reggae” bands. Influences range widely from classics like Toots and the Stones, to the hybrids of the 90’s like Fishbone, Chili Peppers, Sublime and 311, as well as contemporaries like John Browns Body, Black Seeds and Slightly Stoopid, not to mention personal & family connections to greats like the Subdudes and Aquarium Rescue Unit. While most of the songs are written by Seth Strickland, (a surrogate child of the Subdudes), it is Otis Lande (son of jazz legend Art Lande) who leads the band on musical direction. Add in one Jyemo, a lefty world beat drummer of supernatural acumen and the resulting chemistry cannot be understated.
