Mar 2 - Mar 4    Cirque du Soleil presents Corteo
CORTEO, which means cortege in Italian, is a joyous procession, a festive parade imagined by a clown. The show brings together the passion of the actor with the grace and power of the acrobat to plunge the audience into a theatrical world of fun, comedy and spontaneity situated in a mysterious space between heaven and earth. The clown pictures his own funeral taking place in a carnival atmosphere, watched over by quietly caring angels. Juxtaposing the large with the small, the ridiculous with the tragic and the magic of perfection with the charm of imperfection, the show highlights the strength and fragility of the clown, as well as his wisdom and kindness, to illustrate the portion of humanity that is within each of us. The music, by turns lyrical and playful, carries CORTEO through a timeless celebration in which illusion teases reality.

Mar 8    QUIANA LYNELL AT OGDEN AFTER HOURS
The 2017 Sarah Vaughan International Jazz Vocal Competition winner, Quiana Lynell infuses her classical training with her gospel upbringing and approaches jazz as a storyteller. Her mesmerizing performances can only come about because Quiana believes every word that journeys from her soul. She hits every note with perfect timing and impeccable pitch. If Sam Cooke were alive to hear her performance of his classic, “A Change is Gonna Come,” he might say, “yeah…that is what I meant.” A graduate from Louisiana State University’s music department, Quiana is able to harness her voice as a true instrument and perform various genres of music while maintaining her own sound. As a performer, arranger and songwriter, Quiana is making her statement on the music scene. “When I heard Quiana sing, I immediately invited her to share the stage with me in Poland with my band and a 75 piece orchestra. After just one rehearsal, Nona Hendryx (from the iconic R&B group LaBelle) invited her to perform a duet on ‘A Change is Gonna Come.’ Quiana commanded that stage and left us all with the same feeling as my initial thought, ‘who are you and where have you been,'” recalled Blanchard. This past July, Quiana went into Esplanade Studios in New Orleans to record some tracks with Blanchard (trumpet, synths), Jon Cowherd (piano, organ), Marvin Sewell (guitars), David Pulphus (bass), and Eric Harland (drums, percussion). Some originals and some classics, all uniquely approached to breathe a new purpose, a new sound into these melodies. Don’t be the last to discover what Europe, many musicians and concert promoters already know, Quiana Lynell is on her way to becoming one of the most important vocal discoveries in jazz.

Mar 22    Panorama Jazz Band at Ogden After Hours
PANORAMA JAZZ BAND AT OGDEN AFTER HOURS /// March 22 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm The Panorama Jazz Band took shape in November 1995 when a friend asked New Orleans clarinetist Ben Schenck to organize a combo for her wedding. Originally a trio, the group gradually evolved by 2006 to include seven players (clarinet, alto saxophone, trombone, accordion, banjo, tuba and drums). The original concept was to perform New Orleans Traditional Jazz and drop in an occasional number from the Caribbean or Eastern Europe. Before long, however, the musicians in the band gradually became more fascinated by Jewish klezmer, the Creole biguines of Martinique, and folk music from the Balkans and Latin America, and occasionally dropping in music by Jellyroll Morton, Louis Armstrong, Sidney Bechet or Fats Domino to remind listeners where the band is from. In 1997 they began playing Mardi Gras parades, a project which eventually grew into a separate marching outfit, the Panorama Brass Band. That group has been active primarily during Carnival time in New Orleans as the official brass band of the Krewe du Jieux and the St. Anthony Ramblers as well as marching in such parades as Krewe of Muses, Knights of Babylon, Krewe of Tucks, Krewe of Morpheus and Box of Wine. The brass band does also perform in New Orleans nightclubs as well as for weddings, funerals, private parties and other events.

Mar 24    4th Annual Spring Sweep presented by Entergy
Lake Pontchartrain Basin Foundation (LPBF) will hold its annual Spring Sweep, a day designated to clean up around the Lake Pontchartrain Basin, on Saturday, March 24, 2018, from 9:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Now in its 4th year, LPBF’s Spring Sweep is held in conjunction with the Great American Cleanup sponsored by Keep America Beautiful. Volunteers, partners, and sponsors help care for the areas that drain the Pontchartrain Basin by cleaning curbs, ditches, and storm drains on city streets and rural roadways. Designated areas for cleanup around the lake at this time include Orleans, Jefferson, St. Bernard, St. Charles, St. John, St. Tammany, and Tangipahoa parishes. Debris picked up by volunteers is recorded on data cards that catalogue and quantify the types and amounts of trash collected. LPBF forwards this data to local water quality authorities. To say thank you to the volunteers, on Spring Sweep day LPBF’s Spring Sweep partners provide a picnic for registered participants. The picnic serves as a way to bring together everyone to celebrate the clean sweep of our region. Spring Sweep is an excellent avenue for stewardship and education/outreach. It provides a wonderful opportunity to help in keeping Lake Pontchartrain swimmable.

Mar 29    Lunch & Learn: Dangers of 401(k) Liability for Small Business Owners

Don't risk your business and personal wealth because of the 401(k) program you chose for your employees.

Your business is growing and you are now able to offer benefits to your hard-working employees like a 401(k) retirement plan. Congratulations! These signs of growth are exciting and may lead to lower employee turnover, but like most other things, it's not as simple as it looks. There are myriad of rules and possibilities for liability that small business owners need to be aware of when they offer a 401(k) plan to their employees.

Todd Villarrubia, Managing Member of Fountainhead Global, invites you to his seminar where he will discuss the often misunderstood aspects of establishing a retirement plan for your business. Todd has been a practicing tax and estate attorney for over two decades, representing thousands of families in protecting their wealth from the government and creditors. He has worked with hundreds of financial planners, CPAs, business succession advisors, and related advisors throughout the United States.

In this lunch & learn seminar, we will discuss:

  • Common mistakes that business owners make

  • What questions to ask when shopping for a 401(k) plan

  • How hidden fees can affect your plan in the long-term

  • Ways in which you can reduce your personal exposure to risk if something goes wrong

In general terms, a fiduciary is a person who owes a duty of care and trust to another and must act primarily for the benefit of the other in a particular activity. For retirement plans, the law defines the actions that result in fiduciary duties and the extent of those duties.

With these responsibilities, there is also some potential liability. However, there are actions you can take to demonstrate that you carried out your responsibilities as well as ways to limit your liability.

Even if you hire a financial institution or retirement plan professional to manage your plan, you retain some fiduciary responsibility for the decision to select and keep the service provider.

Be confident that your 401(k) plan is compliant with IRS and DOL policy by remaining vigilant and up-to-date on 401(k) laws and your personal obligations.

A light lunch and soft drinks will be served.

Mar 31    The NOLA Project Presents: Men on Boats
Ten explorers. Four boats. One Grand Canyon. MEN ON BOATS is the true(ish) history of an 1869 expedition, when a one-armed captain and a crew of insane yet loyal volunteers set out to chart the course of the Colorado River. On the way they must battle the elements, and all too often, one another. This at turns hilarious, at turns poignant play is an insightful commentary of American history turned on its head, as the entire cast and creative team of “men” are all played by women. Originally premiering in NYC at Playwright’s Horizons in 2015, this marks the first ever production of the play in the American South. This production is supported by a generous grant from The New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Foundation and the New Orleans Arts Council/City of New Orleans.
