Jun 14    2018 Educational Seminar with NOLA SHRM: HR 101 for Small Businesses

Join the New Orleans Chamber in partnership with NOLA SHRM (Society for Human Resource Management) for our next educational small business seminar. Amy Bakay, owner of HR NOLA, will present:

Top HR Compliance Issues Facing Employers Today.

In our program, Top HR Compliance Issues Facing Employers Today, we review 10 tips to help small businesses avoid costly HR compliance errors. Specifically, how to hire the right people and terminate the wrong people; and how to manage people in between.
There are basic requirements you have to fulfill as a small business owner. When people come to work for you, it’s your responsibility to provide a safe and healthy workplace, to comply with relevant employment laws in your country, to keep good records, and to pay salaries and benefits promptly and effectively.
In this tutorial, we’ll dive into these topics and show you how to comply with these important human resource requirements in your small business. They may not be the most exciting things you’ll do in your small business, but they are critical if you want to have happy, productive employees—and avoid organizational or costly legal headaches down the road.
The topics we cover:
  1. Safety & Wellness
  2. Hiring Best Practices
  3. Onboarding
  4. Evaluating Employees
  5. Handbooks & Policies
  6. Training
  7. Compensation
  8. FLSA and Job Classification
  9. Required Federal and State Postings & Reporting
  10. Compliant Termination Procedures
This class qualifies for SHRM recertification and HRCI activity. You will be given the codes at the event. (# of Credits TBA)

Jun 18    Lake Pontchartrain Cleanup
Join United by Blue and Massey's Outfitters for their first ever joint waterway cleanup in New Orleans, LA! This cleanup is one of 20 that United by Blue is co-hosting nationwide this summer, from June-August, to establish community partnerships between their specialty retailers, conservation or municipal partners, and volunteers. We will clean the shoreline of Lake Pontchartrain, a naturally formed marshland lake that flows into the Gulf of Mexico. Used for industrial and recreational purposes, the wetlands can trap litter that flows through the lake. Removing the trash from the shoreline not only protects this vital and vibrant ecosystem, but it also prevents it from flowing into the Gulf and the ocean. Join us after school/work for cleaning, games, and an evening enjoying the lake and its wildlife!

Jun 27    The #MeToo Movement and Employment Practices Liability

In 2017, 84,254 EEOC Charges were filed and total lawsuit recovery was $42.4 Million. Of those charges, 30% alleged Harassment. Jury Awards continue to rise and currently have an average award of $390,000, with growing pressure for larger awards given the current culture.

Come join us where we’ll discuss current claim examples, loss statistics, climate at the EEOC and court rulings that affect case law, as well as updated risk management services available.

Our featured speaker is Angella Myers, Founding Partner in The Myers Law Group. With offices in Texas and Louisiana, Angella is one of Travelers' top panel counsel for Employment Practices Liability claims, successfully handling thousands of claims over the past 20 years. Armed with vast experience and fierce dedication to client advocacy and services, Angella has earned the trust and admiration of countless insureds.

- Can an employer terminate a group of employees who are posting complaints on Facebook about their pay?
- Can an employee terminate a male employee who reports to work wearing a dress and heels?
- Can an employer terminate an employee who reports to work with visible tattoos?
- Does an employee have to be paid overtime if he agrees to being an independent contractor?
- Can an employee terminate an injured or ill employee who does not return to work after using all his or her FMLA leave?

Jun 29    2018 Ribbon Cutting: Louisiana Department of Health - WellSpot

Join the New Orleans Chamber of Commerce for a Ribbon Cutting to celebrate the City of New Orleans being designated as a Level #2 WellSpot by the Louisiana Department of Health (LDH)!

WellSpots are organizations throughout the state that have implemented healthy changes in their policies and environment to help their communities live well.

LDH designates spaces and places as WellSpots after they voluntarily meet wellness benchmarks that correspond to their organization type - worksite, child care center, school, college/university, restaurant, healthcare facility, or hospital. This could mean going tobacco-free, becoming breastfeeding friendly, offering healthy vending options, or implementing worksite wellness programming. These benchmarks not only impact employees, but also those that the organization serves –  communities, students, patients, patrons and more.

Small choices towards wellness, enabled by WellSpots, allow Louisiana residents the opportunity for balance. Together, WellSpots can combat the prevalence of obesity, tobacco use and other chronic diseases in our state.  This shapes a future that gives our residents the chance to feel better and enjoy life longer.  To learn more about the Well-Ahead Louisiana initiative visit
