The Urban Swing Dance Institute, LLC, an affiliate of Who Dat Steppers of New Orleans, LA, LLC, Launches a Movement for Cultural Sovereignty, Economic Liberation & Psychological Healing Through Dance
New Orleans, LA – In a world where cultural and economic autonomy are fundamental to self-determination, the Who Dat Steppers’ Urban Swing Dance Institute is stepping beyond dance to ignite a Radical Revolution of Values—a movement of cultural sovereignty, economic empowerment, and spiritual healing through the art of Urban Swing Dance.
Dance has long been a form of resistance, survival, and rejuvenation for marginalized communities. For centuries of systemic oppression, Black communities have carried generational trauma—physical, emotional, and psychological wounds inflicted by Western cultural hegemony, economic exclusion, and social erasure. Urban Swing Dance is more than movement—it is therapy. It is reclamation. It is a declaration of freedom.
The Urban Swing Dance Class at Leroux’s (9734 Hayne Blvd.) is not just an event; it is a 21st Century Renaissance—a cultural and economic paradigm shift restoring dance as a sacred, recreational, and economic resource for Black communities.
Why This Matters Now: The Economic & Cultural Paradigm Shift
New Orleans, the birthplace of jazz and Black social dancing, has historically been an incubator for African American artistic innovation—yet the monetization of Black creativity has too often been exploited, appropriated, and economically detached from its originators. Today, we reclaim and redirect that wealth by recognizing the potential of Urban Swing Dance as an underdeveloped economic force.
This class and movement explore how Black social dance—when paired with strategic organization and financial investment—can function as a self-sustaining industry:
? Dance studios and instructors as small business owners
? Social spaces and venues driving economic activity in Black communities
? Fashion and footwear industries rooted in our unique cultural aesthetics
? Live music, DJs, and performance spaces amplifying the power of Black artistry
? Health & wellness industries integrating dance as mental and physical therapy
This isn’t just a dance class—it is a reconstruction of an economic model that centers Black creativity as capital, Black movement as medicine, and Black unity as power.
The Transformative Benefits of Dance: Healing Trauma Through Movement
For a people who have survived enslavement, segregation, displacement, and mass incarceration, Urban Swing Dance is a revolutionary act of self-restoration. Dance is a catalyst for healing:
?? Physical Liberation – A return to rhythmic movement strengthens the body, cardiovascular health, and stamina.
?? Mental Therapy – Engaging in Urban Swing reduces anxiety, stress, and depression, breaking cycles of emotional suppression.
?? Social & Psychological Connection – Partner dance fosters trust, leadership, and unity, reinforcing positive relational dynamics in Black families and communities.
?? Spiritual Alignment – Music, movement, and rhythm bring us back into harmony with ancestral traditions of storytelling, fellowship, and cultural expression.
